Every Home Enhanced with a Garden Table

Not all timber is equal when it comes to Australian outdoor conditions, UV exposure, humidity, rain and temperature extremes demand a species that can handle decades of outdoor use without rotting, cracking or warping. Auscraft works exclusively with Australian hardwood species rated Class 1 or Class 2 for outdoor durability under AS 5604, the Australian Standard for timber durability ratings.

Timber Species Guide

Spotted Gum (Corymbia citriodora), Janka hardness 11.0 kN. Class 1 outdoor durability. Natural resistance to termites and Lyctid borer. Distinctive interlocked grain with pale to dark brown colour variation. The most popular choice for both residential and commercial picnic tables across Australia.

Ironbark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon), Janka hardness 14.0 kN. Class 1 outdoor durability. Among the hardest commercial timbers in Australia. Preferred for high-traffic commercial installations including parks, schools and hospitality venues. Deep red-brown colour that weathers to silver-grey if left untreated.

Merbau (Intsia bijuga), Janka hardness 8.6 kN. Class 2 outdoor durability. Warm reddish-brown with natural oils that resist moisture. Widely used across Australian outdoor decking and furniture. Takes stain and finish particularly well for custom colour matching.

QLD Red Gum (Eucalyptus tereticornis), Janka hardness 11.0 kN. Class 1 outdoor durability. Traditional Australian hardwood with deep red tones and excellent structural performance across all Australian climate zones.

All Auscraft picnic tables are built from kiln-dried hardwood to reduce moisture content and maximise dimensional stability. Custom finish options include natural oil, exterior decking oil, penetrating stain and painted finishes. Contact us to discuss which species and finish is right for your setting.

This is the fourth table our cafe has purchased. That should say it all. When time comes to upgrade others we will again come back. Every table has stood up to the busy demands our business puts on them. All our tables live outside.

Frequently Asked Questions About Picnic Tables

How much does a custom picnic table cost in Australia?

Pricing depends on timber species, size, finish and configuration. Auscraft operates on a direct quote model: we provide a personalised written quote based on your exact requirements. Contact us or use the Get a Quote form to receive your quote within one business day.

What timber species do you use for picnic tables?

We use premium Australian hardwoods including Spotted Gum (Janka 11.0 kN), Merbau (8.6 kN) and Ironbark (14.0 kN): all selected for their durability and natural resistance to Australian outdoor conditions. Treated pine is also available as a cost-effective option.

Do you deliver picnic tables across all of Australia?

Yes: we deliver Australia-wide. Direct delivery is available for Sydney and surrounding NSW areas. For Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and regional areas, we arrange freight delivery to your door. Delivery costs are included in your personalised quote.

Can I order a custom size or configuration?

Yes. All Auscraft picnic tables are made to order. You can specify your preferred timber species, length (1200mm–3000mm and beyond), seat configuration, finish and colour. We also accommodate non-standard briefs, contact us to discuss your requirements.

How long does it take to build a custom picnic table?

Most standard orders are completed within 2–4 weeks from confirmed quote. Lead times vary by order complexity and current workshop volume. We confirm your expected completion date before you commit, and keep you updated throughout the build.

What is the best timber for outdoor picnic tables in Australia?

For Australian outdoor conditions, Spotted Gum and Ironbark are the highest-performing species. Both achieve Class 1 outdoor durability under AS 5604, the Australian Standard for timber durability. Spotted Gum (Janka 11.0 kN) offers excellent balance between hardness, appearance and workability. Ironbark (Janka 14.0 kN) is the harder option, preferred for high-traffic commercial settings. Merbau and QLD Red Gum are strong Class 2 alternatives. All four species resist moisture, UV and termite activity far better than treated pine or imported softwoods.

Are Auscraft picnic tables compliant with Australian Standards?

Yes. Auscraft uses timber species rated Class 1 or Class 2 for outdoor durability under AS 5604 (Timber, Natural durability ratings). Our accessible picnic table designs are developed to align with AS 1428.1 (Design for access and mobility), which specifies table height, clearance and reach requirements for wheelchair users. All structural connections and fasteners are specified for outdoor exposure.

How long do hardwood picnic tables last outdoors in Australia?

Australian hardwood picnic tables built from Class 1 species such as Spotted Gum or Ironbark last 25–40 years in outdoor conditions with basic maintenance (annual oiling). Tables left completely untreated in exposed conditions typically last 15–25 years. Treated pine tables last 10–15 years under similar conditions. The key factors are timber species, finish maintenance and exposure to standing water. Auscraft recommends re-oiling with a quality exterior decking oil once per year for maximum longevity.

Can councils and schools order picnic tables in bulk from Auscraft?

Yes. Auscraft regularly supplies bulk orders to local councils, schools, childcare centres, parks and recreation facilities across Australia. Bulk orders (5+ tables) receive a dedicated project quote that includes freight, installation coordination and standardised specification documentation suitable for council procurement and tender purposes. We can supply AS 5604-compliant hardwood tables and provide species origin documentation for sustainability reporting. Contact us to discuss your project requirements and timeline.

Do you make accessible picnic tables for wheelchair users?

Yes. Auscraft manufactures accessible picnic tables designed to allow wheelchair access at one or both ends of the table. These tables feature an open end without bench seats, allowing a wheelchair user to pull directly to the table surface. Table height, surface clearance and reach distance are specified to align with AS 1428.1 accessibility requirements. Accessible tables are available in all standard timber species and custom sizes. They are suitable for parks, schools, aged care, aquatic centres and public spaces subject to DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliance.

How much does a picnic table cost in Australia?

Auscraft operates on a direct quote model based on your exact requirements.
