Picnic Table Size Guide Australia: 4, 6, 8 & 10 Seater

Choosing the right size picnic table is one of the most practical decisions in any outdoor furniture project. A table that is too small will feel crowded. A table that is too large will dominate the space. This guide covers every standard picnic table size available from Auscraft, with seating capacity, dimensions and the best use case for each.

All Auscraft picnic tables are built to order from our West Gosford, NSW workshop using premium Australian hardwoods: Spotted Gum, Ironbark, Merbau and QLD Red Gum. If a standard size does not suit your space, we build to custom dimensions, contact us for a custom quote.

Bench seat height is 450mm on all standard models, consistent with Australian outdoor furniture standards. All dimensions are nominal and may vary by up to 5mm. Accessible configurations (open-ended for wheelchair access) are available on request, see our accessible picnic tables page.

4 Seater Picnic Table (1.2m)

The 1.2m picnic table comfortably seats four adults, two per side. It is the most compact option in the Auscraft range and suits tighter spaces: small residential backyards, courtyard areas, childcare playgrounds and break-out spaces where square footage is limited.

At 1200mm long, it fits comfortably in a 2m x 2m clear space including seating access. If you are placing tables in a row, allow at least 1.5m between tables for comfortable movement.

6 Seater Picnic Table (1.5m)

The 1.5m picnic table is the most popular size in Australia for both residential and light commercial use. Seating six adults comfortably, it suits family backyards, school outdoor areas, beer gardens, cafe courtyards and park settings. It offers a practical balance between capacity and footprint.

For a large group of ten, our 10 seater picnic table guide covers standard dimensions (2700–3000mm), timber species and commercial specifications.

For a different table configuration, see our round picnic table guide, circular formats suit compact square areas and improve accessibility.

For a 6 seater picnic table, allow a clear space of approximately 2.5m x 2m to give comfortable seating access from all sides. In a park or commercial setting with multiple tables, allow a 1.8m aisle between table ends.

8 Seater Picnic Table (1.8m)

The 1.8m picnic table seats eight adults and is the most common size for commercial outdoor venues in Australia. It suits large residential entertaining areas, sporting club facilities, pub beer gardens, school canteen areas and any setting where throughput and capacity matter.

An 8 seater picnic table requires a clear space of approximately 2.8m x 2m. For high-traffic venues, allow wider aisles, 2m between table ends is comfortable for service staff and large groups moving around.

10 Seater Picnic Table (2.1m)

The 2.1m table seats ten adults and is designed for high-capacity commercial environments: council parks, school grounds, large hospitality venues and corporate outdoor areas. At this length, timber species selection matters more, we recommend Ironbark or Spotted Gum for structural confidence over the longer span.

Allow a clear space of 3.1m x 2m for comfortable seating and access.

10-12 Seater Picnic Table (2.4m)

The 2.4m table is our largest standard configuration. It suits council reserves, large parks, corporate campuses and any venue where maximising seating per unit of ground space is a priority. All 2.4m tables are built with Ironbark or Spotted Gum and reinforced cross-member joinery to handle the span.

How Much Space Does a Picnic Table Need?

The general rule: allow 600mm of clearance behind each bench seat for people to comfortably sit down and stand up. Add the bench seat depth (typically 300mm) and you need approximately 900mm of clear space on each long side of the table.

Table Size Minimum Clear Space (L x W) Comfortable Space (L x W)
1.2m (4 seater) 1.9m x 1.8m 2.2m x 2.1m
1.5m (6 seater) 2.2m x 1.8m 2.5m x 2.1m
1.8m (8 seater) 2.5m x 1.8m 2.8m x 2.1m
2.1m (10 seater) 2.8m x 1.8m 3.1m x 2.1m
2.4m (10-12 seater) 3.1m x 1.8m 3.4m x 2.1m

Which Size is Right for Your Project?

Residential backyard

For a standard suburban backyard entertaining area, a 1.5m (6 seater) is the most practical choice. It seats the typical family plus a few guests comfortably without dominating the garden. In larger backyards or alfresco areas, a 1.8m (8 seater) gives more flexibility for entertaining.

Schools and childcare

For playground and canteen use, 1.2m (4 seater) and 1.5m (6 seater) tables are the standard. Smaller tables allow better supervision and flexibility in layout. For a senior school canteen or outdoor study area, 1.8m tables are common. See our school and childcare picnic tables page.

Parks and councils

Council park installations typically specify 1.8m (8 seater) as the standard size. This balances capacity, cost and maintenance. High-traffic nodes such as BBQ areas and picnic shelters often use 2.1m or 2.4m tables. See our parks and councils page.

Beer gardens and hospitality

For beer gardens and cafe courtyards, 1.5m (6 seater) is the most practical: it allows tighter spacing and more seats per square metre while still feeling comfortable. Where outdoor space is generous, 1.8m (8 seater) works well. See our beer garden and pub tables page.
