Picnic Tables for Mining Sites and FIFO Camps | Heavy Duty | Auscraft
Mine sites and FIFO worker accommodation camps in Western Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory and South Australia operate outdoor recreation and meal areas that are used around the clock by hundreds of workers. Outdoor furniture in these environments needs to withstand extreme UV, dust, temperature cycling, and constant heavy use — without creating maintenance work orders for site facilities teams.
Why Mining and Resources Facilities Choose Hardwood
FIFO camps and mine site recreation areas are not kind to ordinary outdoor furniture. The combination of UV intensity at inland Australian latitudes, temperature swings of 30–40°C between day and night, red dust infiltration, and the weight of workers in full PPE destroys plastic furniture within 2–3 seasons and warps powder-coated steel within 5 years.
Auscraft Durability Class 1 hardwood picnic tables are built from Australian Ironbark, Spotted Gum and Merbau — species with Janka hardness ratings of 8,600 to 14,000 N. They are designed for exactly the extreme outdoor conditions of remote and regional Australian worksites. With annual oiling, service life is 25–40 years. No special site facilities procedures required.
Outdoor furniture that outlasts the mine site cycle and requires one line item in the maintenance schedule.
Recommended Species for Extreme Australian Conditions
Ironbark
Hardest Australian hardwood. 14,000 N Janka. Maximum resistance to surface wear and impact under continuous heavy use. Recommended for high-traffic camp recreation areas. Red-grey natural colour.
Spotted Gum
11,000 N Janka. Excellent UV stability and thermal performance. Close grain, smooth surface. Suited to covered camp outdoor areas and mess hall exteriors. Honey-grey tones.
Merbau
Naturally oily Class 1 species. Tolerates dust and limited maintenance schedules better than other species. Recommended for coastal resource sites (Pilbara ports, offshore base facilities) or high-humidity tropical locations (Qld, NT).
FIFO Camp Applications
- Outdoor recreation and BBQ areas — the primary application; 6-seater or 8-seater tables for worker downtime areas between shifts
- Mess hall outdoor surrounds — overflow seating adjacent to covered mess facilities; all-weather use without cover
- Crib hut and crib shelter areas — underground and open-cut mine crib areas require outdoor furniture that withstands dust and temperature extremes; Ironbark for above-ground crib shelters
- Explosives handling exclusion zone breakout areas — remote site seating areas beyond exclusion zones; durable, low maintenance
- Site manager and administration outdoor areas — site office and administration building surrounds for staff outdoor breaks
Bulk Supply and Staged Delivery to Remote Sites
FIFO camp and mine site furniture orders typically involve 10–50+ tables for a single order. Auscraft manages bulk orders with:
- Formal purchase order processing with itemised pricing
- Staged delivery aligned to camp construction or refurbishment schedules
- Freight coordination to remote WA, NT, QLD and SA sites (contact us with your delivery address for a freight quote)
- Consistent species and finish across the entire order
- Wholesale pricing for orders of 10 or more tables — see wholesale pricing
Low Maintenance — A Key Metric for Remote Site Facilities
Remote site facilities teams manage maintenance with limited tradespeople and supply chain access. The maintenance argument for hardwood is straightforward:
- Annual oiling is the only routine maintenance task — one standard maintenance order per year
- No repainting, no rust treatment, no structural repair under normal use
- No replacement cycle — 25–40 year service life vs 3–5 year replacement cycle for treated pine or powder-coated steel
- Oil supply available from any major hardware supplier nationwide
For remote sites with extended oiling intervals (biennial rather than annual), Merbau's natural oils provide additional protection.
OH&S and Contractor Management Compliance
Auscraft provides all documentation required for site OH&S management systems and contractor management requirements:
- Formal quote on company letterhead with ABN
- Product specification sheet including AS 5604 class, Janka hardness, dimensions and weight
- 5-year structural warranty
- Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) on request for installation activities
- UNSPSC code 56101700 for procurement system entry
