The Auscraft Premium Hardwood Picnic Table is crafted from Australian hardwood timbers, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt or Ironbark, selected for their exceptional durability, natural beauty and outstanding performance in Australian outdoor conditions. Handbuilt at our West Gosford, NSW workshop, this is the pinnacle of our picnic table range: a piece that will last decades with proper care, developing a rich patina with age.
Why Australian Hardwood?
Australian hardwoods are among the densest and most durable timber species available anywhere in the world. Unlike pine, which is a softwood, species such as Spotted Gum, Blackbutt and Ironbark offer natural resistance to moisture, insects and the UV intensity of the Australian sun. They require less frequent maintenance than softer timbers and age beautifully when properly oiled or finished.
- Spotted Gum, distinctive wavy grain, naturally high oil content, brown to grey tones. Janka hardness rating: 11.0 kN. Highly resistant to surface wear and moisture.
- Blackbutt, pale straw to light brown, straight grain, excellent dimensional stability. Janka: 9.1 kN. Popular for both residential and commercial applications.
- Ironbark, one of Australia's hardest timbers, deep red-brown tones, exceptional rot and insect resistance. Janka: 14.0 kN. Ideal for exposed outdoor environments.
Handcrafted Construction
Every Premium Hardwood Picnic Table is built to order at our NSW workshop. Boards are selected for consistent grain and colour, then machined, jointed and assembled using stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanised hardware that won't rust in outdoor conditions. All edges are rounded and sanded to a smooth finish, no splinters, no sharp corners.
Sizing & Configuration
Available from 1200mm to 3600mm in length, with custom lengths on request. Standard seat width, height and overhang dimensions are based on ergonomic outdoor dining standards. We can modify bench seat angles, add armrests, adjust table height for wheelchair access or build non-standard configurations for unique spaces.
Finish Options
We recommend an oil finish for hardwood to allow the timber to breathe while providing moisture protection. Varnish and paint options are also available. We apply the first coat in our workshop; subsequent re-oiling (typically every 12–18 months outdoors) maintains the timber's appearance and extends its lifespan significantly.
Where It's Used
- Premium residential backyards and alfresco dining areas
- Luxury hotels, resorts and high-end hospitality venues
- Architectural landscape projects and heritage sites
- Long-term commercial installations requiring minimal maintenance
- Coastal properties where salt air resistance is important
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will a hardwood picnic table last outdoors?
With regular oiling (every 12–18 months), an Auscraft hardwood picnic table can last 20–30 years or more outdoors. The dense grain of species like Ironbark and Spotted Gum makes them naturally resistant to rot, insects and UV degradation.
Which hardwood species do you recommend for coastal locations?
Spotted Gum and Ironbark both perform exceptionally well in coastal environments due to their high natural oil content and density. We recommend an initial oil treatment applied in our workshop, followed by annual re-oiling to maintain protection.
Can I get the hardwood table in a painted finish?
While a painted finish is possible, we recommend oil or varnish to showcase the natural beauty of Australian hardwood. Paint hides the grain and requires more maintenance over time. If colour matching to an outdoor scheme is important, a stained or tinted oil can achieve this while preserving the timber's character.
What is the difference between this table and the Classic Picnic Table?
The Classic Picnic Table is typically built in pine and is an excellent entry-level option for backyards and schools. The Premium Hardwood Table uses denser, harder Australian species for greater longevity and visual impact. For high-traffic use, see also our Heavy Duty Commercial Grade Picnic Table.
Warranty & Long-Term Care
Every Auscraft picnic table is backed by a 12-month structural warranty, covering any defect in workmanship or joinery that affects the stability or strength of your table. Our hardwood species, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt and Ironbark, are selected for their natural durability, with lifespans of 20+ years when properly maintained.
We provide a comprehensive Care & Maintenance guide covering all finish types, oiled, stained, painted and varnished, with detailed maintenance schedules. A professional maintenance kit and on-site servicing by our expert team are also available. Contact us for details.

Australian Hardwood Species for Picnic Tables
Auscraft builds to order using four premium Australian hardwood species. Each timber is selected for its natural durability, resistance to harsh outdoor conditions and distinctive grain character. We help you choose the right species for your environment, use and aesthetic.
| Timber Species | Janka Hardness | Durability Class | Best For | Character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spotted Gum | 11.0 kN | Class 1 (25+ yr) | Coastal, high-traffic commercial, parks | Wavy grain, honey to grey-brown tones |
| Ironbark | 14.0 kN | Class 1 (25+ yr) | Heavy-duty commercial, schools, sporting clubs | Dense, interlocked grain, rich chocolate-red |
| Merbau | 8.6 kN | Class 1 (25+ yr) | Residential backyards, cafes, beer gardens | Straight grain, warm reddish-brown, low movement |
| QLD Red Gum | 9.8 kN | Class 1 (25+ yr) | Statement pieces, feature outdoor dining | Rich red tones, natural figure, stunning grain |
All species are Class 1 or Class 2 durability rated, meaning they are suitable for ground contact and full outdoor exposure without the need for chemical treatment. We finish every table with a penetrating hardwood oil that enhances the natural colour and protects the timber through the Australian seasons.

How do I care for and maintain my outdoor furniture?

The frequency of maintenance may vary depending on environmental conditions and usage. We offer recommendations on suitable products and application methods.
What materials do you use for your outdoor furniture?
We craft our outdoor furniture using high-quality pine and durable hardwood, carefully selected for their strength and suitability in outdoor settings.
