Not all timber performs equally outdoors. The species used in your outdoor table has a direct effect on how long it will last and how much maintenance it requires.
Spotted Gum (Corymbia citriodora): Durability Class 1. One of the toughest commercially available Australian hardwoods. Natural oils provide strong resistance to moisture, UV and insects. Develops a silver-grey weathered patina outdoors if left unfinished, many commercial clients prefer this low-maintenance appearance. Hardness rating around 11 kN makes it highly resistant to surface damage.
Ironbark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon): Durability Class 1. Extremely dense and hard, with natural tannins that resist decay. Slower to weather than spotted gum but equally durable. Commonly specified for council and commercial installations where longevity is the primary criterion.
Merbau (Intsia bijuga): Durability Class 2. Slightly less hard than ironbark but widely available across Australia, well-suited to outdoor furniture in non-coastal settings and an excellent value option for high-volume commercial procurement.

The maintenance requirement for hardwood outdoor tables is often overstated. Durability Class 1 species like spotted gum and ironbark will not rot, crack structurally, or fail without any maintenance at all, they will simply weather to grey. If the original colour and finish are preferred, an annual application of penetrating oil (not film-forming varnish or paint) is sufficient for most Australian conditions. In tropical or coastal zones, twice-yearly oiling extends the life of the surface finish. That is the full maintenance requirement for a table that will outlast most of the infrastructure around it.
