Hardwood Picnic Tables Built for the Australian Outdoors

A hardwood picnic table, often searched for as a wooden picnic table, is a solid-timber outdoor setting crafted from dense, durable species, such as Spotted Gum, Ironbark, or Merbau, engineered to withstand Australia's UV exposure, heavy rain, and temperature swings without warping or cracking. Unlike treated pine alternatives, hardwood picnic tables carry a natural resistance to moisture and insects, making them the preferred choice for backyards, schools, parks, and commercial hospitality venues across Australia. Auscraft handcrafts each table to order in West Gosford, NSW, and ships Australia-wide within 1–2 weeks.

Types of Picnic Tables Available in Australia

  • Classic A-Frame Picnic Table: Traditional wooden bench-seat design; suits residential backyards and school grounds; available in Spotted Gum, Ironbark or Merbau hardwood.
  • Heavy Duty Commercial Picnic Table: 50mm+ thick hardwood rails, bolted steel joinery; rated for high-traffic parks, councils, and hospitality venues.
  • Premium Hardwood Picnic Table: Class 1 Australian hardwood; naturally oil-finished; built for coastal and high-UV environments.

Picnic Table FAQs

Can Auscraft picnic tables be fitted with an umbrella hole?

Yes. We can include a pre-drilled umbrella hole (typically 50mm diameter) in the wooden table top at no additional cost. Simply request this at the time of order. We recommend specifying your umbrella pole diameter to ensure the correct fit. Most standard market umbrellas use a 38mm or 50mm pole.

What is the weight limit for an Auscraft hardwood picnic table?

Our standard hardwood picnic tables are built to handle commercial-grade loads. The table tops are rated for static loads in excess of 200kg, and the bench seats are built to the same standard. For specific structural certifications for council or school installations, contact us directly.

Do you offer wheelchair accessible picnic tables?

Yes. We build accessible picnic table configurations with one end open to allow wheelchair access. These comply with Australian accessibility guidelines and are popular with parks, councils, schools and public venues. Contact us to discuss your accessible outdoor furniture requirements.

How long does delivery take across Australia?

Tables ship from our West Gosford, NSW workshop. Typical lead times: NSW 2-5 business days, VIC/QLD 4-7 business days, SA/WA 7-12 business days. Custom orders require 2-4 weeks production time before dispatch. We provide tracking on all freight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Auscraft picnic tables come with an umbrella hole?

Yes. An umbrella hole is available as a custom option on any Auscraft picnic table, including the Classic Picnic Table, the Premium Hardwood Picnic Table and the Heavy Duty Commercial Grade table. The hole is routed through the centre of the wooden tabletop and supplied with a stainless steel collar to protect the timber edge and accommodate a standard 38mm or 48mm umbrella pole.

When you request a quote, simply note that you need a picnic table with umbrella hole and specify the pole diameter if known. We can also add a matching cap if you want to cover the hole when the umbrella is not in use. This is the most popular custom addition for backyard entertaining areas, beer gardens, and shaded commercial outdoor spaces across Australia.

What size picnic table do I need?

The right size depends on how many people you want to seat and how much outdoor space you have. As a practical guide:

  • 1,200 mm (4 seater): suits small backyards, balconies and school canteen corners
  • 1,500 mm (6 seater): the most common residential choice; fits a standard patio or deck
  • 1,800 mm (8 seater): ideal for families, beer gardens and council park installations
  • 2,100 mm or 2,400 mm (10 seater): suited to commercial venues, large outdoor areas and school ovals

Allow at least 600 mm of clearance behind each bench seat for comfortable entry and exit. For a full seating capacity chart with dimensions, see our Picnic Table Sizes Guide. All Auscraft tables are made to order, so custom lengths beyond 2,400 mm are available on request. Contact us with your space measurements and we will recommend the right size for your situation.

How long does it take to receive my picnic table?

Because every Auscraft table is handcrafted to order at our West Gosford, NSW workshop, lead times vary by configuration and current workload. As a guide:

  • Standard pine tables in stock sizes typically have a 1 to 2 week build time
  • Hardwood tables (Spotted Gum, Ironbark, Merbau, QLD Red Gum) generally require 2 to 4 weeks, depending on timber availability and finish selection
  • Custom configurations (umbrella hole, non-standard dimensions, accessible end-open design) add 3 to 7 business days to the above timelines

Freight transit time from our NSW workshop is typically 1 to 3 business days for Sydney and surrounding areas, and 3 to 7 business days for interstate delivery to Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Your written quote will include an estimated dispatch date. Request a quote and we will confirm current lead times when we respond.

What is the best timber for an outdoor picnic table in Australia?

For Australian outdoor conditions, choosing the right timber for a wooden picnic table matters just as much as the design, and the most durable choices are native hardwoods with a Durability Class 1 or 2 rating under AS 5604. At Auscraft we work with four species that perform consistently well in backyards, parks and commercial settings:

  • Spotted Gum (Class 1, Janka 11,000 N): 40-plus year service life. A tight, consistent grain with a warm honey-to-chocolate colour range. Our most popular hardwood choice for both residential and commercial orders.
  • Ironbark (Class 1, Janka 14,200 N): among the densest timbers available in Australia. Deep red-brown heartwood, outstanding termite and fire resistance. Preferred for high-traffic commercial installations and bushfire-prone regions.
  • Merbau (Class 2, Janka 8,600 N): imported from certified Southeast Asian suppliers. A cost-effective hardwood option with rich reddish-brown colouring that weathers to a silver-grey if left untreated.
  • QLD Red Gum (Class 1, Janka 8,900 N): a distinctly Australian hardwood with deep red tones and excellent natural durability. Ideal for a bold, characterful finish in residential and semi-commercial settings.

If budget is a consideration, structural pine with an H3 or H4 treatment is a practical alternative for sheltered areas. For open-air and coastal exposures, we always recommend a native hardwood. Browse the full range on our picnic tables collection page or request a quote specifying your preferred species.

Picnic Table FAQs

Are Auscraft picnic tables made in Australia?

Yes. Every wooden picnic table is handcrafted in our West Gosford workshop on the NSW Central Coast, about an hour north of Sydney, from quality Australian timber, and delivered across mainland Australia.

What timber do you use for your picnic tables?

We build with premium Australian hardwoods, Spotted Gum, Merbau and Ironbark, as well as treated and untreated (natural) pine. Each species is chosen for its strength and outdoor performance.

Hardwood vs treated pine, which lasts longer outdoors?

Hardwoods like Spotted Gum, Merbau and Ironbark are denser and naturally more resistant to weather, making them ideal for high-use or commercial settings. Treated pine is a more cost-effective option that still performs well outdoors with basic care. Both suit the Australian climate.

What sizes do your picnic tables come in?

Standard timber picnic tables range from 1200mm up to 3000mm. If you need something specific, we make custom sizes from 1200mm to 3600mm.

How many people does each picnic table seat?

As a guide, a 1500mm table seats around 4–6 people, an 1800mm table around 6–8, and a 2400mm table around 8–10. Larger custom sizes and wooden picnic bench configurations can seat more.

Do you make picnic tables with attached benches?

Yes. Most of our picnic tables come as a classic A-frame design with attached wooden benches, and we also offer separated bench and table sets and outdoor bench tables for more flexible seating.

Are your picnic tables suitable for commercial use?

Yes. Our hardwood picnic tables are built with commercial-grade durability and are widely used in cafés, schools, council parks, beer gardens and hospitality venues across Australia.

What warranty do you offer?

All Auscraft picnic tables are covered by a structural warranty on the load-bearing joinery, framing and fixings against manufacturing defects, 1 year on our Pine ranges and 3 years on Premium Hardwood, in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which cannot be excluded. Metal-frame furniture also carries a 2-year rust warranty on the frame. With basic care, timber furniture will last well beyond this, see our Care & Maintenance guide for tips.

How long until my picnic table is ready?

Most standard picnic tables are usually ready in 2–4 days, thanks to our quick lead times and our own West Gosford NSW workshop.
